Webcomic of the Day (11/19/07)

Contestants:

Chainmail Bikini

Ctrl+Alt+Del
Dominic Deegan
Dork Tower
Friendly Hostility
Fuzzy Knights: The Tournament War
Tempts Fate
God Mode
Least I Could Do
Looking For Group
Megatokyo (Actually, another Shirt Guy Dom)
Penny Arcade
Punch an' Pie
Questionable Content
Two Lumps
Yet Another Fantasy Gamer Comic

Holy Hell, if I had the idea to do this webcomic feature on a Monday rather than on a Saturday, I'd have given up. That's a shitton of comics. I need to find a better way to do this.

Not only were there a lot of comics today, there were a lot of good ones. Going down the list of things that at least made me chuckle or grin: Chainmail Bikini, Ctrl+Alt+Del, God Mode, Least I Could Do, Penny Arcade, and Questionable Content. Curse both Ctrl+Alt+Del and Penny Arcade for bringing up Mass Effect - I was hoping to be able to pick up a copy early over the weekend but, alas, if we're carrying it at RadioShack the game hadn't arrived by Friday.

Honestly, this is a tough one. Those were all amusing, but nothing made me laugh out loud. I'm going to give the nod to Questionable Content, however. There were three horrible jokes in there, and it didn't remind me that I'm not one of the privileged few who is playing Mass Effect right now.

Webcomic of the Day (11/18/07)

Contestants:

8-Bit Theater
Darths & Droids
Dominic Deegan
Megatokyo (Ok, Shirt Guy Dom, technically)
Yet Another Fantasy Gamer Comic

Pretty good field for a Sunday, since 8-Bit and MT updated on odd days. There was some definite funny today - 8-Bit, YAFGC, and Megatokyo all got some smiles from me. I'm going to give the nod to 8-Bit, though, since it was classic Black Mage.

Webcomic of the Day (11/17/07)

The contestants:

Ctrl+Alt+Del
Dominic Deegan
Fuzzy Knights: The Tournament War
Least I Could Do
Yet Another Fantasy Gamer Comic

Today's contest is a very close one, between Least I Could Do and Ctrl+Alt+Del. LICD is humorous, and I love the title. On the other hand, CAD has a fantastic idea that I can really support. On the other hand, LICD also has a fantastic idea that I can really support... it just isn't quite as good as CAD's. Neither strip made me laugh out loud (nor did anything else today).

Right now, I think I'm going to have to give the nod to... Least I Could Do! Just because I can see Rayne's idea actually working... no, union and company officials would never joust in order to settle something, but if you throw that idea on the table they may realize how stupid they're being. If you blow up everyone in the Reality TV genre, as Ctrl+Alt+Del suggested, you'll just get more people working on reality TV shows that will be even worse.

Webcomic of the Day

So, new thing I just thought up. Each day, I'm going to pick a 'Webcomic of the Day' - basically, whichever webcomic I read that I think was the best for a given day. I'll probably also do weekly and monthly ones. Since this is only based on webcomics I read, a person's favorite comic might not make it. In which case they should probably tell me about said webcomic.

So here are the rules:

In order to win, a comic must have updated by the time I finish this post. Its not something where I'll go back and change all my choices because Rich Burlew delivers a brilliant Order of the Stick comic an hour after I posted. If a comic is updated after I declare my winner, that comic becomes eligible for the next day's award.

I'll be favoring comics that make me laugh. That means that D&D jokes are probably going to get the nod over something that requires me to use Linux to get.

I won't post any spoilers until the part where I name a winner. So you should read the comics before seeing which one I like best.

I'm free to change or add rules at my discretion. 'cause, ya know, my blog :)

Brilltarded.com?

So, I'm tempted to register brilltarded.com and actually have something on it. It seems like it'd make for a good .com name - easy to remember, easy to spell and pronounce, available.

And I have no idea what I could put on there. I mean, I've got the blog for talking about stuff. So brilltarded.com would only make sense under the following circumstances:

  • This becomes a big enough blog that I want it somewhere other than blogger. I don't see that happening any time soon.
  • I have something somewhat large that I'd like to post on here. I can sort of see that happening, but I've no idea what I might do.
  • I start some sort of actual company. I have a lot of ideas that could certainly be profitable, if I ever acted on them. Of course, they could also fail spectacularly, but that's always a risk. Point is, if I wanted to start a company, it couldn't hurt to have a good name already set up.

Fear of Girls 2

This is both painful and hilarious. Perhaps because, if you've gamed at all, you've gamed with folks like this. If you haven't seen the first 'episode', you might want to check it out as well.

Mmm... Bioware

So, Bioware is apparently hiring writers for their new MMO. If Ctrl+Alt+Del hadn't just done a 'forge credentials to get a job at Bioware in order to get access to a new game' storyline, I'd be tempted to do that myself. However, I don't want to be as dumb as Ethan, so that's out. Maybe I can get Tom to do it...

Personally, I'm hoping for a Knights of the Old Republic massive. It'd be nice to see a professional, fun Star Wars MMO one of these days, since Star Wars Galaxies doesn't really count. Still bitter at them for the way they launched that game... I mean, sure they called it Star Wars, and I had a blaster, but there were no vehicles, no spaceships, nothing Star Wars-y.

Justin pointed out, and I agree, that we'd be better off with KotOR 3 than KotOR Online. A MMO generally doesn't have a storyline, or at least not one that can rival the KotOR games. However, I wouldn't argue about both, and if Bioware is locked in to doing a MMO, KotOR would be my first choice.

Small is The New Big

So, been reading Small is the New Big and 183 Other Riffs, Rants, and Remarkable Business Ideas, by Seth Godin for my Strategic Management class. And, have to say... pretty darned impressed with it so far. Its a lot more readable than most of what gets assigned for a business class, though, like a lot of business books, its primarily about why businesses, individuals, everyone has to adapt to change.

However, the format of the book sets it apart. Rather than having, say, five fairly dry chapters about how change is important, like every other business book does (ironic much?), Godin's book is, basically, a whole series of blog posts. In alphabetic order for, as he notes, "no particularly good reason". It means either you jump around a lot in the book, or the book jumps around a lot on you.

Some of the posts/chapters are really great advice that will make you think. Some of them will make you think 'What was this guy on when he wrote this'? He'll spend one minute talking about how important it is for a company to hire innovative people rather than folks who do their job 'competently', and another minute talking about cuff links. The crazy thing is that, when you actually consider it, most of his rants make sense.

Honestly, its one of the better books I've read in a while (admittedly, when I'm reading something of my choosing, its going to be some sort of fantasy or sci-fi novel most of the time), and one of the only books I've had to read for school that not only will I keep, but I'd recommend picking up (which is probably why I put a link to the book on amazon at the start of this).

A Whole New Blog

So, decided to set up a blog on blogger, so I'd have something that wasn't tied directly to Justin's site, and something I had a bit more control over. I'll likely still use my blog there on official game stuff, things that are only directly targeting my players, etc. But I thought it'd be nice to have a blog for anything I feel like rambling about... which, yeah, is probably going to end up being D&D and other gaming related topics a lot of the time. I'm a gamer, its what I do.

Still, I expect I'll have some non-gaming stuff here... books, movies, the Mets, whatever I feel like talking about. That's the point, right? Who knows, some of it may even be non-geeky... yes, yes, get your laughs out now, you unwashed masses, but I occasionally do have non-geeky stuff to talk about. No, the fact that neither you nor I can think of any examples does not change that fact.
